MLB Owners discussed Golden At-Bat Rule
During a podcast interview, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred mentioned that the MLB owners had discussed the notion of adding a Golden At-Bat Rule and there was some buzz about it.
The rule would basically be as follows: Each team is given 1 golden at bat per game where they can replace the batter coming up to the plate with any other batter in their lineup (assuming it won't include anyone currently on base but who knows) or their bench and not have to remove the replaced player from the game.
Here is an example of how it could be used: Let's say the Yankees and Dodgers are in the World Series again. It's game 7, bottom of the 9th with 2 out and the Yankees are batting. The Dodgers are ahead 4-2. There is a man on first base and the Yankees have their weak hitting number 9 hitter coming up. They could use their golden at-bat, swap out the weak hitting 9 hitter for Aaron Judge, even though Judge is already batting 2nd in the lineup. Let's say in this scenario Judge hits a 2 run homer to tie the game and the hitter after him gets out. So now we move onto the 10th inning in a 4-4 tie with the player Judge replaced still in the game at his defensive position and Judge still in CF where he usually plays. The Dodgers don't score in the top of the 10th. In the bottom of the 10th Judge leads off since the #2 spot in the lineup is up, he hits another home run and the Yankees win the World Series.
Quite a dramatic example I have used where the Golden At-bat rule could plausibly determine a World Series, but you get the idea.
Here's my take: This is an utterly ridiculous mockery of the game of baseball, which I have known and loved since I was 4 years old. It's insane and gimmicky. I hate it. This is an idea so bad it should spend all of eternity burning in the fires of hell.
Tell us how you really feel: This is an idea so bad it should spend all of eternity burning in the fires of hell.
Come on. It must have some merit: No. This is an idea so bad it should spend all of eternity burning in the fires of hell.
Are you done?: Yes, this is a really bad idea. However, if it was modified to only include players no currently in the lineup, I could get on board. So, you have a pinch hitter come off the bench and hit for a weak hitter once in a game but the replaced hitter gets to stay in the game after the pinch hit at bat. I don't actually mind that.
What do you think stackers?
Sat for all, GR
What! Does it mean they're gonna allow 1 batter to play again?
Why don't they include 1 extra batter?
reply
Yes that’s what it means.
reply
This is ridiculous 😡 I remember when Sachin used to play they applied the same rule, but it was only that the batter could come in last 10 overs and replacing only another batsmen.
That was a stupid stupid decisions by ICC and was criticized so heavily that the ICC chairman had to resign. I don't know how it would make a game more interesting?
reply
This is some Calvinball-level BS.
And yeah, I hated the DH and the extra-inning rules, but at least those are things that are reasonably anticipated and known going into the game. This feels like something that would make the strategy of the sport pretty much pointless.
reply
I wasn't crazy about the DH or Extra innings rule or making the bases bigger. I did like the pitch clock. But all of those I could see how it potentially could enhance the quality of the game without turning it into a sideshow. But this just seems absolutely ridiculous.
reply
This is quite possibly the worst idea I've ever heard the MLB mention. Hopefully they toss the idea in the dumpster where it belongs.
reply
Agreed. It is a terrible idea.

Here I just made one up! Can we get a golden spectator rule where the winning team by 6 or more after 7 innings gets to select a fan to hit. The team with the most spectator hits over the course of the year gets the number one draft pick!
reply
Great. I am not expecting many spectator hits. Teams will need to start putting former players and minor league players in the crowd as ringers.

A good bunt is hard to defend!
reply
True. Might be the only hope.

This is laughably bad. It’s almost as if this is an April fools joke

I hope it was just Manfred trying to act like Baseball is trying to be innovative and cool. "yeah we are hip, check out this wild thing we are discussing" kind of thing and not actually something they are considering.

Please, no. I don't care if they make any Mickey Mouse circus rule for any other sport, but do not touch baseball. I suddenly feel sick and think I might need to vomit.
reply
My sentiments exactly.

The kids playing in their backyard would not come up with a stupider rule.
A line up is a line up.

Agreed.

Going by the history of adding such ridiculous gameplay in Cricket, I can say if implemented, this wouldn't be permanent as such rules play with the true notion of the game.
I've seen such rules added to Cricket and been removed within the same year of their implementation.

Imagine... you strike out Aaron Judge or Ohanti only.... to face them immediately again...
There just isn't a need for this but I will say as an Astro fan who suffered through years of Martín Maldonado you just have to chalk up some at-bats as outs. We already have the universal DH which I am not the biggest fan of since some pitchers were good hitters like Zack Greinke.
Only way I am for the golden rule idea is if they make pitchers hit in both leagues!
reply
It also really screws up the 3 batter rule. I mean if you have your lefty specialist in because you are facing L R L but then they put in Aaron Judge instead of one of the lefties and you can't change the pitcher is kind of crazy.

Its just beyond common sense in my mind... a truly stupid idea

Great post. I hope we can cover some of the dumbest proposed rules on the pod.
reply
Only if the segment is called proposed rules that should spend all of eternity burning in the fires of hell.
It's long but catchy.
