The project's strategic importance extends beyond mere connectivity improvements. It positions Meta to better support its growing AI investments and the increasing demands of its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp4. Moreover, this infrastructure development aligns with Meta's long-term vision of expanding its digital ecosystem and maintaining its competitive edge in the rapidly evolving tech landscape. As the company continues to invest in emerging technologies and data-intensive services, the "W" cable network is poised to become a critical asset in Meta's global strategy for years to come.

The new part of it is that Meta is doing this on its own hook, not taking part of a cable laid by other companies. That is a much bigger deal than before.
