California is one of the outstanding examples of how a free system can collapse in a creeping process into a state economy and then into socialism. Danger is great that given the fact that the state has gone into deep debt to create pseudo-jobs, irreparable damage has been done to the next generation. Ultimately being the employer of last resort is more than just a weird turn in weird politics of the radical left.

Careful with numbers like these; job growth can be negative, so "accounting for x% of" has no meaning. (The sum isn't 100 anymore).
I have a Mises piece on this from yeeeears back,

California reinvents itself about every 25-30 years. It will be fine.

Not just the number of jobs, but the bloated compensation... if you want your mind blown check out http://www.transparentcalifornia.com
Search for some common occupations like "public defender", "nurse", "police", "ultrasonographer", "teacher". The number of pages of people clearing >500k is insane... there has been zero fiscal oversight

😠yup! happy thanksgiving to you too!
Unfortunately the interface to that website sucks but I'm sure if there was an easier way to navigate the underlying database it would be easier to identify the bloat and more shocking to the public how much waste there is. People are complaining about mayors of major cities making 200k meanwhile random ultrasound techs are clearing 300-400k...

What state policy guidelines were able to do to the State of California:
-- It alone accounts for 48% of the national homeless population in the United States, has an exorbitant number of fentanyl users and significant increases in robberies and homicides

I’m surprised that California doesn’t attract much foreign investments such that the new jobs are predominantly government generated.
I wonder if these new jobs are necessary or frivolous?

The cost of doing business in California is just too high. Not only is it a regulatory hellscape, you have to pay workers a lot more because living costs are so high.
I don't meet as many people in California as I used to who say they're from other states. Few people want to come here anymore and the ones who stay are usually staying because of job or family
