I first started watching them in theaters in Japan. I got the full experience there.
I have to correct something from an earlier post. We never borrowed DVDs in Japan, only VHSs.

Playing in a theatre near you possibly! seeing any of these Gjibli movies on the big screen is a treat. Especially Mononoke
