One of my favorite John Prine songs. He wrote it at the age of 25 right after getting out of the army:

He wrote this when he got out of the army he never got sent to Vietnam, but a lot of his friends did.

He was lucky in that respect if he was in the Army. Coming back whole was a feat usually accomplished by the support troops in VietNam. Everybody else came back somewhat damaged, one way or another.

I think he was stationed in Germany.

That was the escape that a lot of them managed to make. He probably wasn’t a ground pounder, either. A lot of the people that went to Germany had some other speciality in the military.

No, not nice. It is a hard song, but a true song.
People say, “Thank you for your service.” It is absolute BS. They just don’t know.

Man, it's been a bit since I've listened to Prine. Had almost forgotten how goos he was.

Every few years I dig back in. Then my family asks me to stop playing that damn song over and over.
