These are the only two limitations I am aware of.
Signature Script: The maximum size is 10,000 bytes. Transaction Size: The entire transaction must be less than or equal to 1 megabyte (1,000,000 bytes).

Yeah, you’re totally right—this is pretty much how Satoshi embedded his message in the coinbase.
As for the limits, here’s what I know:
  • Coinbase Transaction Size: The whole transaction, including any custom tags or data, has to fit within the block size limit (4MB for SegWit blocks).
  • Coinbase ScriptSig: The ScriptSig field in the coinbase is capped at 100 bytes. This is usually where miners put their custom tags or messages.
So, while you can definitely add a short phrase or a snippet (like part of a song lyric), there’s no way you could fit an entire song.

interesting. I wonder if there is a validation built into the DATUM service on Start9 that would stop someone from accidentally inputting a tag that is too big. what a tragedy if it like...fucked up your mined solo block 😬

Great question! It would be good to have feedback from others as well, not just from me. That would be terrible if it happened. I don't have the resources right now, but there’s a list of weak Bitcoin private keys worth exploring. Recently, someone discovered a complex one. They managed to find the private key but were front-run when attempting to cash out. Truly a tragedy.
