Since AskSN is dead (archived), I will ask my question here:
Is there any way to filter crap on SN? Assmilking posts seem to be taking over. This post was also trying to raise some awareness: #769623
The last few days feel like a stream of just empty link posts or meme/picture posts. It's hard to find good content. I don't want to scroll for 30 minutes to find no good content.
Are there any people I should definitely follow? Any recommendations?
How are you guys dealing with this?

I mute a lot of territories so that when I’m signed in, I only see the most relevant content. If I want to see cats and dogs, I just manually go to that territory.
I also view the site on mobile while not signed in so I can see everything.
Filtering by combined sats volume like ek mentioned is also a great default option.

FYI (and anyone reading): you can switch to @anon without logging out using switch account next to logout

That’s good to know.
Thanks, Ek.
reply
What good does that do? You still see the same stuff.
reply
When I’m signed in, I only see territories that I haven’t muted.
When I’m anon, I see every single post in every single territory.
reply
I guess that since I am a nooby, I just see all the posts that aren’t outlawed. I haven’t changed any filters or subscribed to any territories. Neither have I blocked any territories or muted any stackers. I guess I just like it raw.
BTW, what can and can’t you do as anon? What is the difference? Since I don’t block or mute anything, isn’t that the same as being anon, but for the nym?
reply
If you haven’t muted or filtered anything or anyone, then there’s no difference between your regular account and anon.
Once territories get so big and active, it will make more sense to only subscribe to territories you actually want to see posts from.

Same, I'm trying not to block anything either.

The assmilking problem is a little nondescript imho. Everyone has their own definition and their own idea of what good content is.
AFAICT the more general problem is that most people don't zap. Then quite a few of the people that do zap, primarily zap their friends or stackers that call them handsome in so many ways. The best zappers zap the best content they find on the site and do it routinely, regardless of whether it's flattering to them personally or not, and that's why they routinely rank high in rewards.
I'm not sure how stackers expect to see the content they want to see in the world without zapping, but I also understand they'd rather earn sats than spend them.

Since I was on nostr for months before I joined SN, I am now used to zapping good content. Sometimes it is hard to say what the right amount should be. The default I have is 21, but 100 is also easily given by a good post.
reply
Thanks. I don't think the anti assmilker group can understand your point. They just want to take down top stackers from the leaderboard without zapping.
reply

I don't think they're even concerned about the leaderboard. I think they're just unhappy with all the crappy content they see.
reply
Why don’t they come right out and say what the crappy content is without naming nym? Call out the crappy posts in replies. Make a reply that says, “You’re assmilking, here!” That would be a warning to other readers/stackers.
reply
They are concerned. I don't want to take the nyms of a few of them but they targeted me for the same very recently. If you remember, one of them even asked if I and @Rsync25 are the same. They made comments like I abuse the reward system to be on top of the leaderboard which isn't correct. The account that's by the name assmilker also made derogatory comments on my posts. I had to mute two stackers unwillingly and had to ignore the assmilker (nym).
I think the thing that's worked for me is zapping top content daily, creating some engaging posts,(may be), subscribing to territories and stackers I like, so as to get notifications from them. I've even subscribed you and never miss a comment and post from you. My default zap is 10 which I do if I find something valuable, interesting and even funny. And that's all I understand.
reply
I think that is part of the problem. People see the posts in their own light and in their own eyes. They will zap what they zap. It is hard for the staff to direct the zapping if all the stackers do not agree on what is good zapping practice. If you just leave it alone, let people zap what they will zap you will continue getting the results you are getting. I also think that posters zap comments to increase the comments on their posts. I guess you could call this a form of assmilking, if you will.

This is a bit true. I usually reply under people that l know will carry on a conversation. I actually enjoy the back and forth of fleshing out an idea. K00b, l have always wondered if l rank high on the trust value?
reply
How does one see the trust vaule?
reply

The trust value isn't displayed publicly. We plan to change that, but it will require a lot of engineering effort because displaying it will encourage folks to try to find vulnerabilities in it, and people so love finding paths of least resistance.
reply

Interesting, but I see the truth in that. You should just make it so people have to pay 1000 sats to get their trust values from you. Only once ever 3 months or something. Imagine all the sat profits you could get from it lol

It the one part of the project that remains private that isn't protecting the privacy of stackers, so I'd like to change that. It's also critical to change if we'll even make good on our promise to decentralize.
reply

Maybe they could have a choice to hide their trust value like the leaderboard? I don't really care either way, just here for the conversation.
reply
What contributes to trust scores? Is there something that the individual stacker can change about what he is doing? I understand discernment is a factor in anything we do.
reply
0 sats \ 0 replies \ @k00b 2h
Trust scores only measure how much other stackers trust your zaps. By trust, we mean something very very narrow and in a single dimension.
reply
I've found that much as I don't want a big notifications page, subscribing the groups and users with high signal-to-noise ratios (and muting some with super low ones) has helped a lot. I'll often hit my notifications and then some specific groups before looking at the main page.
(Also, links with no description are a huge personal pet peeve. It's not adding value if you're not telling me why the link matters.)
reply
Good content is a subjective thing. What you like, the others may dislike and vice versa.
I think the best way to find good content (ti filter out what you called crap content) on SN is to remain on top posts which I prefer and I escape the crap.
I also enjoy ~stacker_sports but I don't find many sports posts in top, so I do it manually.
Fyi, For me a good pic of nature or a good meme isn't a crap. I believe a photo says a thousand words.

Damn inflation! Back in the days, a picture was worth more than a thousand words... now it is only a thousand words...
reply
Haha! Who knows it'll be worth a 1000 sats in Bitcoin Standard?
reply
Yes, a big problem is subjectivity and individuals’ interests. I don’t think you can change those. You might be able to change zapping behavior with different incentives, though.

I'm planning to commit to writing at least several sentences / creating OC with any link / picture I post moving forward. Maybe we can all agree to that? I can send at least a tiny zap to posts that put in deliberate effort. Let me know in a reply if you want to join in doing that / whether I should modify my criteria.
reply
I thought that was what was de rigor for all posts. If you are posting something, there must be some sort of reason for your actions.
reply
0 sats \ 1 reply \ @satgoob 1h
There are some users who serially post without that, and as a new user, I figured some people are just crossposting relevant news to curate news relevant to stackers. It’s not my favorite, but I don’t have a sense of consensus as a new user
reply
I find some of the posts that look like cross posts are interesting, so I read, comment and zap them. There are, however, a lot of them that don’t interest me that I could filter. But, if I filter, I would filter out the ones that interest me.
reply
a filtering feature would be great, really.
reply
YES YES YES! That's what we want!
reply
31 sats \ 3 replies \ @ek 7h
Are you filtering by sats in your content settings?
This might help.
reply
If you filter by sats, you might miss the good ones that are new, before they cross your filter barrier. Also, there seem to be some that are interesting, to me, but are low sats posts. I don’t really want to filter them out.
reply
Now I am! What would be a good filter to recommend? I set it to 100 now.
reply
0 sats \ 0 replies \ @ek 7h
I'd say start with 100 and increase until you're happy
reply
31 sats \ 5 replies \ @k00b 7h
You can filter by sats. It’s in your settings
reply
ah, that's a way that would work I guess (since links and non-productive posts usually don't get much in sats)
reply
You may be cutting off something within your sphere of interests using the sats filter. All new posts have very few sats on them, until someone likes it a lot. You could be missing out on some good stuff this way.
reply
0 sats \ 1 reply \ @ek 1h
You could be missing out on some good stuff this way.
How if the good stuff rises above the filter? As long as there are always stackers willing to look through the new stuff to zap the good stuff early (and be rewarded for it), this shouldn't be the case.
reply
Then, you are saying, there is no need for the filters? I don’t use them and have not lost enjoyment of reading the posts. Even some heavily subscribed posts don’t interest me, whereas, some of the untapped ones do. Maybe there is no need to worry about what content and what zaps are going on in this space.
reply
Thank you! Let's see if that will help
reply
Yep and this crap sucks
Any recommendations? Can we dowzap them
