Lol this is hilarious to me because it shows how screwed Gaetz is and how badly the nomination is going to fail. If it wasn't going to do any damage they would release it but because it is catestophicly bad for Gaetz the Speaker is trying to talk Ethics into not releasing it even though they don't have to listen and can share it with Senate Judicary if need be.

So what is Mike Johnson's angle on this? Gaetz ally? Straddling the line? All just theater?

I think its a straddling-the-line thing at the moment. He's stuck between a rock and a hard place with this whole debacle and really the Senate Republicans are even worse off. This was something that was easy for him to say and no one can really fault him for doing so because since Gaetz has left office in theory the investigation ended two days ago even though the report was more or less done.

I don't know the truth of this, but on another forum I read that with Gaetz resigning he effectively checkmated their report....that they cannot legally release the report since he his now not a member of congress and therefore they lack jurisdiction.
Any truth to that?

Based on the way Johnson was speaking, it sounds like they can legally release the report, and he's appealing to tradition for them not to release it.

Yeah they can or what is more likely is that they give it to the Senate for his confirmation hearing and then because of the hearing it will be made public

It’s a media hit job
Why are these allegations coming out now and not before?

Oh it’s been public! He first went under investigation with the DOJ in 2021. Ethics later opened up a case against him when the drug use came out. It’s been an open thing on the hill and something McCarthy talked about when Gaetz ousted him. Gaetz wanted McCarthy to force Ethics to close it but that’s just not how it works
