Great article in the National Post by John Ivison about a Vietnamese family that fled communism to now have their property expropriated and redistributed in Canada.

TLDR: The Nguyen family left Vietnam in the 70s when the communists took over. They rebuilt their lives in Canada and started a fishing business. They struggled for decades but the business eventually became successful. Now the Canadian government (Department of Fisheries) is stepping in to expropriate 75% of their quota and redistribute it to local First Nations and their own employees.
I sent this article to all my Canadian Real Estate truther friends who keep piling all their net worth into real estate. If they will take your fish, what stops them from taking your rental properties?

afaict, if government in Canada don't separate private land to public land, they'll eventually takeaway everything unless people don't let them. In India my land is my own and its registered only for the records.
However, there are many new buildings which are constructed by the governments to provide shelter to the poor and they all remain government property even after the poor pay installments for so called ownership of the house. The ownership is actually a kind of agreement which says that they can't sell the property. So it's not real ownership.

They can't rent it. They can't buy another house or property. They can't use it for any commercial activity.

Why did they run from one communist place to another? The socialists have been strong in Canada for a long time. Socialism is just disguised (or last step to) communism according to Marxist theory. Now they are intangled with the communist state. The US took in a lot of Vietnamese during the late 70s or did they come over in the early 70’s? The two cases would have been very different. BTW, your investing friends probably don’t want to hear it and denial would be strong.

Hmmm ……. The US had just gotten a load of Vietnamese that were airlifted out around that time. So, I don’t think it would have been too difficult to come to the US. There are lots of Hmong and other Vietnamese here in my local area, although I am not sure when they arrived. Of course, there is not much commercial fishing here because we are far inland.

We also have the example of the Cubans, who fled that tragic island and have already experienced the devastating moral and economic consequences of collectivist policies that seek to model an egalitarian society -- a failed experiment that sought to create a "new man", who would have a worldview communal and would always sacrifice himself for the "common good".
This experiment resulted in an anti-utopian and economically bankrupt society, whose main characteristics are widespread poverty and an incredibly repressive system of social control, managed by a government with unlimited powers over its citizens.

Good thing you didn't. I expect things will marginally improve once Trudeau is out but so much of the nanny state nonsense and welfare state has become entrenched it is hard to change things. Mike Harris is still talked about like he is the devil by much of the population in Ontario from when he was Premier of the province all he did was cut some social/gov programs so they could balance the budget and people talk about it like they were suffering through the Irish potato famine.

We have some family that might be moving to Toronto for work reasons, but they're moving from one of America's most expensive commie cities, so it's more or less a lateral move.
