I missed the 'one thing' until after writing all this out. Any ways heres several things.
Less disposable products in dining and retail.
Standard sized reusable containers will become popular again. (Think milk jugs/mason jars.)
Higher energy costs.

Government control of finances for sure. While cash makes it harder the government can still track by serial numbers and such so going mainstream would break the people free.
