The big mistake progressives made is diving into social and cultural issues and allowing their loudest and most obnoxious members drive the agenda on these issues. They had some momentum for themselves engaging economically disenfranchised folks but then decided they would turn into cultural tyrants who expected everyone else to fall in line and if they didn't they would band together to try to destroy the dissenters.
