I didn't realize blood transfusions were invented in WW I. I would have expected it to be a little older than that.
I was also a little surprised to find it. But then I realised modern pathology had its roots somewhere around the 1880s and so.

I usually expect these things to have been discovered during the American Civil War. That seemed to be the right place at the right time for many medical breakthroughs.

Yupp! You're a true American Patriot. You can still pass the claim for American discovery for blood transfusion.
The first blood bank in the United States was established in 1937 by Dr. Bernard Fantus at Cook County Hospital in Chicago.
But even this wasn't world's first. The first one was established by Frederic Durán-Jordà during the Spanish Civil War in 1936.
