What do you think of the previews so far?
I love the changes I've seen so far. The test will be how well they actually blended all these new elements together.
I'm particularly excited about navigable rivers and expanding urban areas.

The only thing I'm pretty lukewarm about it changing cultures midgame. Seems weird. Most other stuff looks really solid.

It'll be interesting to see how those transitions feel. I'm sure they know they're taking a big swing with that.
It is a variation of an idea I wanted them to have before, though. I wanted poorly managed empires to be able to spin off part of their territory as a new civ that's culturally linked to the starting civ. Basically, have revolutions that form new civs.

I agree with your idea of it. But the way they have it, it seems like just something you pick mid-game. Seems artificial.
Maybe it will be like you can only pick certain cultures if you met some requirements. That might be interesting.

There are definitely requirements for unlocking certain options. There's a historically accurate path for each civ, but then I noticed in one of the videos Egypt couldn't turn into Mongolia without having some quantity of horses.
It seems like the point is going to be to have civilizations based on the circumstances of the game. That would alleviate the issue of playing as Mongolia only to learn that you have no horses or other similar geography bummers.

Ah, I see. I didn't know about that part. That actually sounds like it might be fun, as you shape your culture according to the geography and history that you make as you play
