Welcome to the 44th edition of The Daily Zap — A Daily Newspaper (Kind of 🙏). Here, you'll get links to all of the latest news and updates mostly from the last 24 hours, divided in Sections (much similar to pages on a newspaper).
Let's unfold!

~Bitcoin News of the Day

  • The Coinshares Q3 mining report, with research led by James Butterfill, reveals that bitcoin mining costs are rising, reaching an estimated $49,500 per bitcoin (BTC) when accounting for cash expenses alone. Including additional costs like depreciation and stock-based compensation, the production cost averages $96,100. This heightened cost environment stems from an increased mining difficulty and infrastructure expansion, which have collectively driven up expenditure.

Global Trade & ~Econ

  • This shift reflects a strategic move toward technology-intensive products, positioning BRICS+ nations as vital players in the global high-tech market, it added.
  • In addition to trade dynamics, the currencies of BRICS+ nations are gaining traction in the global economy. The Yuan has remained stable, with slight appreciation, while the Indian rupee has faced depreciation, particularly since 2018.
  • Notably, the share of the U.S. dollar as a global reserve currency has declined from 71.5% in 2000 to 58.2% in 2024, signalling a potential shift toward a more multipolar currency framework.

~Politics_and_Law

  • The anti-Muslim scaremongering is a cornerstone of Mr. Trump’s political identity, dating back at least to his 2016 campaign when he said he would create a registry of Muslims and embraced an apocryphal story about Gen. John J. Pershing executing Muslim rebels in the Philippines with bullets dipped in pig fat.
  • But in the final stretch of the presidential race, Mr. Trump is trying to persuade a potentially decisive group of Arab and Muslim voters that they should vote for him, even though he has spent years insulting and demonizing them.”

  • The significant increase in owners' political giving can be attributed in large part − though not exclusively − to the addition of the Walton-Penner ownership group, which purchased the Denver Broncos in 2022. According to Federal Election Commission filings reviewed by USA TODAY Sports, Broncos co-owner Rob Walton has donated more than $16.5 million between January 1, 2023 and October 1, while the team's controlling owner Greg Penner and his wife Carrie are also among the biggest donors in NFL ownership. The Penners, who oversee day-to-day operations of the team, have given $1.2 million, including a $1 million donation from Carrie Walton Penner to a Democratic political action committee earlier this year.

~Tech & ~Science

  • Traditional imaging systems are bidirectional—meaning if I can see you, you can see me too. However, researchers at UCLA have recently developed a groundbreaking imaging technology known as unidirectional imaging, which forms images in only one direction. This innovative approach enables more efficient and compact processing of visual information, allowing for new possibilities in asymmetric visual information processing and communication.

~History with Mystery

  • Although Nosferatu became caught up in copyright disputes, it had a major impact on the vampire stories that came after it. One of its most significant contributions to the horror genre is the idea that sunlight can kill vampires—a detail that doesn’t appear at all in Dracula. In addition, the haunting visage of Count Orlok has influenced how other filmmakers have portrayed vampires on screen, including in a 2024 remake of the film.

~Entertainment World

  • My boss hates Halloween and every year, she struggles to find movies to watch that are in keeping with the spirit of the season but won’t give her nightmares. I’m honestly tired telling her to watch the same movies every year, so I’m putting it in a list for easy reference. (Bosses like that, right?)

I didn’t realize it had gotten this low.

The funny thing though is that no currency from BRICS and group has increased against USD. INR has been falling, Yuan has been rather less falling. Ruble has been falling.

Ruble value just fell off a cliff today 👀
reply
I saw it but didn't seek for the reasons thinking what might it be more than the currency reacting late to Trump's accession.
reply
What are they settling trade in other than USD? Euro?
reply
That's the fun. Almost 90% of their trades are settled in USD and the agenda of recent BRICS meetings held it unanimously that they need a different currency for BRICS but I doubt they'd ever have it.
reply
Dramatic decline. Dedollarization is proceeding rather swiftly.
reply
I'm doubtful about it. IMO Dollar will remain the king at least till mid century.

I wonder if the rise of home bitcoin mining is having an impact on mining costs or if it's still so trivial in size as to not matter.
Some of the producers like HeatBit and Avalon argue that since home miners are using the waste heat to reduce their heating bills, they're operating more efficiently than industrial miners who have to pay for cooling systems.

I doubt Trump will be able to attract Muslim voters. What he might be able to do, though, is discourage them from voting for Kamala. The Democrats are really caught between a rock and a hard place on Israel/Palestine.
reply
I see Muslim voters are already discouraged to vote for the reason you mentioned. I don't think they are going to vote for Kamala or Dems this time. But if they are to vote, they have no other choice than Trump. Also, it's Trump who at least have been very vocal about solving the wars by diplomacy, imo the muslims might vote for Trump.
reply
I don't think so. Kamala will still win the Muslim vote by a dramatic margin. It's hard to overstate how severely Republicans have alienated Muslims during the War on Terror.
reply
Republicans have alienated Muslims during the War on Terror.
This is true but times change and in politics very fast. I'm seeing at least 50% Muslim Votes going to Trump this time. And the rest of it ...we'll see.
reply
Friendly wager?
2 kilosats to you if Trump gets the higher Muslim vote share and 2 kilosats to me if Kamala gets the higher Muslim voter share

Good morning 😊 Don't stop posting 👍 Today I really liked the one-way images... if we approach the subject well we will see that this would be a great advance and that it would allow help and precision in many things, for example security cameras and give greater certainty to recognize and identify thieves well... and things like that👍 I love that technology continues to advance!!
