They didn't have a choice. Passing over a woman of color for another white male would have been too much hypocrisy to ignore. This is the fundamental problem with making decisions based on characteristics like race and gender instead of merit, you may end up with a less than ideal candidate. I can distinguish 2 broad categories when thinking about this:
Mockingbird media suppressing relevant news and spreading mis, dis or mal-information to influence voting behaviour.
2)Outright fraud / falsification / meddling circumventing the way people actually voted.
The first is a form of info-war that might be looked at as a soft form of election interference.
The second it good old-fashioned vote rigging.
