Modern high-speed internet uses light to quickly and reliably transmit large amounts of data through fiber-optic cables, but currently, light signals hit a bottleneck when data processing is necessary. For that, they must convert into electrical signals for processing before further transmission.

Do we need more speed really?

It depends on what we aim to use it for!

The current speed of transforming human input to machine output with traditional peripheral devices is very low  

The average typing speed for professionals is around 40 to 60 WPM. However, in the field of data entry, higher speeds are often expected. A range of 80 to 100 WPM is considered excellent, with some experienced data entry professionals reaching speeds of 120 WPM

  So if we want to:

  1. Develop more sophisticated I/O devices which will enable us to improve the current speed of translating analogous to digital information;
  2. Develop the current AI technology from the point where it currently is - one of the main impediments which is the speed of I/O with it (doesn't matter whether its between human vs AI or AI vs AI);
  3. Be able to transfer much I/O data from a kinect/neurolink type of devices that are responsible for life saving/changing operations connected to our bodies.

Then yes - we need much higher speeds of communications.

But if we want to just stream movies on Netflix - then definitely not.

That makes sense. For what I use technology and internet for, I will probably be good forever with what we have now. It that's me.
