The United States Department of the Interior (DOI) said Thursday that the federal government is sending $71 million to 13 tribal communities around the country for projects that will increase access to electricity via clean energy sources.
The money will flow through the Bureau of Indian Affairs Tribal Electrification Program, a $150 million initiative – $145.5 million for awards and $4.5 million for administrative costs – established in August 2023 and funded by the Inflation Reduction Act.
Award amounts (rounded) and recipients are:
$11.9 million to the Rosebud Sioux Tribe in South Dakota;
$8.7 million to the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians in Minnesota;
$7.4 million to the Navajo Tribal Authority in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah;
$7.4 million to the Eastern Shoshone Housing Authority in Wyoming;
$6.5 million to the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa in Minnesota;
$6.1 million to the Hopi Utilities Corporation in Arizona;
$6 million to Kootznoowoo, Incorporated in Alaska;
$4.3 million to the Yurok Tribe in California; and
$3.9 million to Quinault Indian Nation in Washington State.
