Aha! I will give it a try before soiling my radio with an Apple product.

The issue is with the permissions on the serial device. One command in the terminal resolved it for me though I have to run it each time I plug the device in.

Yep. I have been down this road before. I will be using my daughter's mac. I had the same issue with linux when trying to load Graphene on my pixel.

Getting Started with Meshtastic - The Comms Channel

If you are still having issues @siggy47 I have noticed that Linux can have issues with serial/USB connections. I don't have a solution yet other than use another computer (Windows/Mac).
