I know a lot of us here are big boys and like to talk professional sports. At the same time, many of us probably have little boys / girls of our own that participate in children's sports. Just wanted to start a post to discuss the kiddo sports your kiddo are participating / had participated in or simply discuss the sports your kiddo like to do on their own.
For myself, I have 3 kids. I've tried putting them into football (soccer) classes for all 3 of them when they were young (4-5 years old), and somehow it just didn't click. They had no interest in the ball, and simply stood back and watched.
The eldest, my daughter, started rock climbing (indoor gym rock climbing) at the age of 7. I've been trying to push her to join competitions and do competitive climbing, but she insists on not joining competitions. So I just enroll her into leisure climbing classes to let her learn/improve that way. Although covid got everything shut down and we ended up having a gap year in 2020, I'm super glad that she got back into climbing in summer 2021. She is 13 now and is still climbing strong.
My older son did not join any sports program growing up, as he did not seem to be interested in any sports. I had signed him up to try a few things (soccer, rock climbing, swimming, basketball), but he would end up having a bad time and we would give up on it. I told him that he needs to exercise and make him run with me 5 nights a week, 2km per run. Other than running, which he is forced to do, he had been enjoying biking with his friend lately and would go on 10km-15km rides to the local mall or to nearby parks. I'm just happy to see him finding a physical activity that he enjoys, but at the same time, the running continues.
My little one is 6 now and he just started ringette in September. This is the first competitive team sport between all 3 of my kids. The little guy gets a full head and body of sweat, as well as a big smile on his face after every practice. He is on the entry level team, so there are no games or tournaments yet, but those will come next year when he gets onto the level 2 team. I'm really looking forward for him to improve his skating and stick handling skills. I'm also taking him to practice skating once a week on top of his practice time in hopes to improve his skating faster. Buying all the gear definitely made a dent in my wallet, but seeing him having a good time with his teammates made it all worth it. I can't wait to see his reactions in the future when he scores goals, wins games and tournaments; as well, to see him learn to lose, and learn to cope with disappointment and failure.
How about you? Does your kiddo participate in team sports, individual sports, or no sports? Any kiddo sport stories you would like to share?

Ever since my twins could walk I would take them to walk, kick ball, and then used those strider bikes. Today they are playing competitive soccer for first time playing 2016 but are 2017. They are little savages lol. I’m happy to keep them away from iPads. 🤙

That's awesome! Agree that sports is a great way to keep the little ones healthy and reduce their screen time.

I think it's great that you've tried to include all your little ones in some sport. As a father, I've discovered that my son likes basketball and I've given him all my support to continue. Keep going, friend @gnilma, all effort and dedication will bear fruit.

It's awesome that your son found a sport that he likes and to have you support him. Same to you, keep going. For me, I think I'm only looking to get them into the habit of doing physical activities and to stay healthy when they grow up.

Not much on our end.
My son does taekwondo and daughter plays tball in the summer.
Interesting your daughter does rock climbing because my son wants to take up rock climbing so we were going to have him try that.
I will be taking the little one skating on occasion as so as it gets cold enough for the outdoor rink to open.

Rock climbing is great. Good for muscle training. I think my daughter got known for being strong, kept getting challenged in arm wrestling, and remained undefeated in elementary school (even against boys). When I asked how, she told me she probably got pretty strong from rock climbing. It's easy on the wallet as well. Aside from the class fees, the only equipment are the harness (which is a 1 time buyout) and climbing shoes (which she outgrows every year and a half or so).
Let your son try it out and borrow/rent the equipment first. You can think about buying the equipment if he really likes it.
reply
Yes we would definitely rent equipment to start.
I think it is also good because he can do it all year around.
