I went to one of these places marked on the map next to where I live (Europe) and asked about paying with BTC. The guy had a blank stare on his face and said he’d never heard of it… I’m going to try a few other ones during the coming days and see how it goes. Great idea though!
If you find the employee doesn't know what you're talking about, see about speaking to the manager, or the owner. What usually happens: few people pay in bitcoin and management stops or doesn't train people in how to accept bitcoin, or ONLY management can accept bitcoin. speaking up, letting it be known to the higher ups running a place that someone finally came in, would be a little help in the long run.

Valid point! However I have noticed that places that accept Bitcoin are fairly upfront about it; a Bitcoin sticker or symbol in an easy to see place usually. But I’ll start asking the employees to ask their superiors, at least worth a try!

it may not have any affect immediately, but after some time it will signal to businesses that it's time to take bitcoin seriously

Much of the work we have to do as a community is to remove stale data from the OSM dataset. A lot was added back in 2014 and is likely stale. Local plebs and local meet-ups are a good way to do this.
We have a new tagging structure and so can start to show data that is likely stale, which we'll do soon.
This is the first FOSS attempt (s/w and data) to do this. We just need time as we know FOSS always wins in the end!

I also looked up a store in Stuttgart, Germany (Hanf im Glück) and they don't mention it on their website as available payment.
Weird.

Great. We love finding stale data!
Can you update the tags?
'currency:XBT=no is just as important as 'currency:XBT=yes

Mhh, but couldn't it still be that they accept BTC but just don't have it listed? Maybe I should ask them
