The open source maintainer pay system looks a bit like the troubles with the open commons of years ago. The conundrum is that everyone will use the commons to the greatest extent possible without concern of what everybody else is doing (the same, in this case). The way the problem was solved before was to enclose the commons and make it the property of specific people. How can that be done with open-source? That is the true question that would solve the problems or the commons in open-source.
