What other options are people using?

I've never yet had a good experience with sms4sats.com either, on any of the multiple times that I've tried it.
I've had success with https://textverified.com.
They allow you to re-up your balance using bitcoin (and others, shown below), for as little as $2.50 per re-up. The average cost of a SMS one-time number is $1.00 (varies depending on which service/country you want).
Unfortunately LN is not a payment option when paying with bitcoin, and their timer starts counting down from 20 minutes when you select bitcoin, so that's really risky in terms of whether or not you can get your on-chain transaction in before the timer expires. I'm not sure what happens when the timer expires. I used Monero to pay and had no problems that way.

I've tried with them as well. Didn't work. But at this point I'm not sure how much of the problem is with the service, vs with Telegram trying to be really hard-core about not allowing these kinds of accounts. Seems like they're trying very hard to stop them.
With some of the numbers I've tried, I've gotten a "This number is blocked" message.
Looks like email is an option, though, at least with a phone sign-up. I may try that.
Though I have a hard time understanding why Telegram would allow email (can be pretty anonymous), but then not allow anon phone accounts.
