In that context, any excuse at hand is good to start the socialist downward spiral. Take from them climate change and they will immediately find another reason, and you will be left in awe by seeing the very people that made of that excuse their quintessential raison d'etre for decades smoothly and swiftly shifting to the new excuse as if that one was actually the real one all the time.

Remember, always remember 1984: "we have always been at war with Eurasia". That's the one and only mechanism at play. Excuses like "climate change" are symptoms, not causes, take that from them and they will continue unscathed with another just like "we have always been at war with Eurasia".
