ICE can fuck right off. We share the same planet, and the same air. The ICE is not improving air quality. The oil industry is extremely dirty and funds all kinds of nasty things on the planet. You can make arguments about how clean the power generation is, but we have options here, like home solar for charging. There is no home fracking or drilling for oil, nor would that be good for the planet.
ICE needs to be deprecated ASAP globally. Buying an oil based vehicle in 2024 is buying into a legacy platform.
I agree with you about spyware and government meddling, but this would apply to ICE or EV cars in 2024. Lets agree to fight this, rather than holding legacy, polluting technology that is driving the planet backwards.

The ICE is not improving air quality.
Modern ICE cars emit hardly any air pollution. We solved that problem with good engine design, catalytic converters, etc. The only real problem with them is CO2.

Producing excess carbon dioxide, and thus changing the planets thermal properties, is what I would describe as air pollution. :-)

Oil is not “extremely dirty.” We all want clear air but let’s not panic. Oil is fine when used properly. CO2 is a gas essential for life to exist.
CO2 is only about 0,04% of the atmosphere. If it triples we are fine. If it cuts down to 1/3 we all die.

You do understand the dynamics of how CO2 works on planet Earth with temperature, and how this in turn effects climates, food and sea levels?
If it triples we are not fine. This could result in increasing temperatures over the Planet by several degrees. "Ok great, its cold where I am, maybe its more livable now. ".
This is devastating for ecosystems. Planets, Animals, Food Crop.. unable to exist at those latitudes or under weather. Freak and random storms becomes more present. Disrupting travel and industry. We have seen this in the last few years, and it will only get worse as we release more carbon dioxide from its slumber.
Rising sea levels is no joke! This is happening right now. Look back at the last 100+ years of gasoline. It has been a vector to poison the planet, lead, and now excess CO2. Tell me that isn't dirty.

May it be the same as the nuclear "winter" after the war? When scientists forgot that soot could go down and the only influence is a little cloudy day instead of the ice age. I don't negate the existence of the global warming, i've felt it myself this summer with 49 degrees on sun 2 weeks without any rain. The drought is much more probable than it was before. So many springs dissapeared due to it in the last decade. It's bad, dangerous, but still not the end of the world.
Also everyone watches the CO2 level, but what about other greenhouse gases like methane?

Maybe it's worth it to look at broader trends and statistics? The price you're paying includes labor, infrastructure, tax, and possibly investments into new (renewable) power plants. Inflation also plays a role here.

We already have way too many cars, EV or not. And reducing CO2 emissions is absolutely necessary, putting a cost on CO2 is something I applaud!

There needs to be something done sure, especially when you look at cities where there is high air pollution (mostly because of old cars etc. see Poland e.g.).
But what doesn't and hasn't worked in the past is putting taxes on it. It's not like the EU will use that money to come up with inventive solutions, people do. This higher "cost" has little do to with actually helping the environment, it only fattens Brussels pockets. At least they think that that will happen. But the unintended consequence will be that neither the EU makes more money, nor that the environment will be helped since this will drive people who can't afford a new car let alone an EV, will still use old cars with bad catalysators (or if any at all) instead of driving a new car with Euro-6 or higher.

Both of you are mixing pollution with CO2. Of all the things that come out of the exhaust pipe, why are politicians so worried about CO2, which is a harmless gas for human beings, while they ignore everything else? Because the CO2 narrative requires "global" solutions, and that means affording them global power.
Please stop buying into that narrative. Yes, pollution is a problem. But they only care about pollution insofar as they can grab more power. Don't equate "CO2" with "pollution"; those are different things.

The money could be used to invest into public transport. There's very little need for innovation in that sector. Just build more trains/tracks, provide more buses, ... Additionally, you could invest into making cities more walkable, and provide better/safer bicycle paths. To the best of my knowledge, walking/cycling/taking the bus is much cheaper than taking a car.

This is true. It does not say much about the lack of charging stations and other infrastructure that is mature for IC automobiles. Then, there is the lack of Lithium that is being presently mined for the batteries (/sarcasm but maybe the new Lithium mines in North Carolina may take up the supply, after cleaning out the useless eaters /sarcasm). Also, the problem with unquenchable battery fires are a small drawback I do not think that our overlords really thought through the process, unless it is to lock us all up in 15 minute cities.

And that was the end of the EU car manufacturers. They fled the EU took their 12.7 million jobs with them and lived happily ever after.
But what about little Jimmy and his family? They drive around in a 30 year old gasoline powered car, because his parents couldn't afford neither the european EVs nor wanted to be spied upon through the chinese cars. It get's the job done, but nothing was gained and a lot was lost.
