"Freedom of speech under massive attack around the word"

— says Elon Musk on X.
Musk was responding to a post that posited X could be suspended in America as it has just been in Brazil by a leftist judge acting to censor his political opponents
He's currently censoring stuff on Twitter he doesn't like. The account that automatically tweeted the location of his private jet got censored. The word "cisgender" famously gets censored.
Honestly, Elon is a massive hypocrite on this topic.

Yupp! This is a great example to show the world what Elon is behind.
reply
That's what the conspiracy going on! Elon blames governments are censoring it but in fact he's doing whatever he wants with X
reply
I don’t think most people understand the consequences of the erosion of freedom of speech.
reply
I would go a step further. I think most people even don't know what freedom of speech mean.
reply
Elon just pretending to be the protagonist while having a clear Mask or Musk!
reply
I never liked Elon. I'm also a businessman, not a billionaire like him, but I've never adopted negative tactics to gain popularity. He is such a man who always want to remain in limelight. In fact he's the biggest player there, but he is the biggest liar as well. I can't trust if he says Brazil is killing free speech because he is also not a big practitioner of free speech! I dare say someone write some allegations upon Musk on X and find out that your post got censored in seconds
reply
He's the owner of twitter. He can censor who he wants. That's his expression of free speech. A third party censoring his platform is a violation of property rights
reply
What-the-fuck. When did you get your understanding of free-speech from?
Haven't you heard the "I Disapprove of What You Say, But I Will Defend to the Death Your Right to Say It"? That is free speech.
Free speech is about unconstrained flow of information in a distributed system of human beings. Any other way hinders the truth-seeking capability of that system.
reply
Exercising free speech is only applicable in the public domain. If i enter your house you have the right to kick me out if I say something you don't like. Right? Twitter is basically Musk's property. It's his right to set the rules. Whether it's a productive business practice is another question.
reply
I am not interested in discussing semantics and technicalities (FYI Musk himself compared Twitter to roman forum as public infrastructure for communication).
I am pointing out that Musk is not interested in "defending to his death their right to say things he doesn't agree with" on his platform.

Must is not wrong. Nostr > X but never the less it's ridiculous to see a Presidential candidate try to attack the 1st amendment like this
reply
Yupp! It's technically a crime but there's the loophole with many excuses like terrorism, abuse, vulgarity blah blah blah
reply
Who do you think will win?
reply
Undoubtedly Musk!
reply
Use nostr. And also point your VPN to Brazil and use X from Brazil ip.
reply
Why point your VPN to Brazil - to confuse the government?
reply
Yeah. Your source ip address for every tcp/ip connection will be from brazil.
reply
Haha! That would be great show!
reply
it's already a certainty today. Let's not pretend that X is a free speech platform, it just opened one little door to censor one particular group a little less. Which is good, but it's dishonest to claim that X doesn't censor, and that it doesn't do so according to the interests of the US global power system.
reply
Yeah, he gave in to Modi's censorship requests with no problem, probably because there's more money to lose there than in Brazil.
reply
Yupp! I can confirm that Elon is the biggest hypocrite in history. He knew India is a big market for X and he certainly adhered to everything Modi wanted him to obey.
reply
Jumping from another perspective due to everything that is happening in X.. and I imagine that you have already heard this but I started to investigate.. and I found Nostr is a protocol and its options are very varied and the information can be verified even cryptographically.. I don't know if anyone will like it but as far as I go I have liked it a lot!!
reply
Yupp! That's one way for sure but not a 100% solution to establish free speech.
reply
The defenders of freedom of expression and "democracy" are attacking freedom of expression and citizen power. It is not that it is contradictory, it is that this is the modus operandi of political and economic governments. You can say what you want IF IT CONVENIENT FOR ME THAT YOU SAY IT. Then comes the discourse of "national security, fight against terrorism, etc., etc., etc."
Will we be seeing more of this in the coming days?
Will Nostr finally be used more frequently by the community?
reply
Nostr should be used more frequently as of now but what we actually need is a foolproof mechanisms that can bypass any type of curtains on FoS.
reply
"Nostr should be used more often from now on, but what we really need are foolproof mechanisms that can avoid any kind of curtain in FoS. cancel"
Nostr, in my humble opinion, is a protocol with a lot of future since its conception. In relays (as a node), FoS. It cannot be censored. So we should use it more.
reply
cannot be censored.
But it can be banned?
reply
How could they do it? Someone said that DNS was blocked in China. But another user gives the answer, Nostr does not depend on DNS.
How are they going to prohibit its use?
They would have to block all the relays and capture all the relay holders and block all clients.
I don't know, it seems difficult to me.
It would be like banning and confiscating Bitcoin.
That's my humble opinion.
reply
I don't know. I'm just confused. I've listened to people make varied opinions on it.
But, I believe, we have a very good chance with nostr to establish free speech and throw away centralised social media.
reply
I genuinely do like what Elon is doing for humanity. I see it as a net benefit. I am concerned about Kamala getting elected, but in the end I know NOSTR will stand, and I will use VPN's and internet message boards to get information if things get really bad.

Elon certainly is a naive businessman!
