How Have You Handled a Scam or a Loss of Money?

Hi All,

Curious about what you have done to handle losing out on some money. It is a "legit" company, but they seem pretty incompetent and it is under $1K so I might just write it off. I've also been scammed in the past on really bad stock investments and altcoins, but those were well deserved because I was playing with snakes - I am Bitcoin only now.

Given that this company is "legitimate" What did you or would you do to move on? I guess it hurts more because the company is legit, and I'm getting screwed over. Would love some opinions and perspectives with situations where you lost money to a scam, or how you have dealt with missing out on some of your money from an honest person/company.

I've been scammed before, out of a few thousand US dollars. There wasn't much I could do about it. Just learned my lesson and moved on.

Yikes! Well it could be worse, someone close to me took out a $30K loan in addition to 20K they put into a scam and is still paying it off to this day (at high interest).

Let go of the past the best I can. Move on. I believe it all balances out in the end. I have taken so many "loses" in my life. But as long as I look to do good, my situation tends to get better.

This is a great point in regard to moving on. I do think the universe balances out in the end - living through it in the moment is the worst.

In this world we live in it is abundant. So I tell myself with getting swindled I can always make it up through one avenue or another.

This isn't an easy insight to integrate. We tend to want fairness. I believe it is better to have faith in balance and focus on self. Keep doing good this and good things come back to us. And find the lessons in everything. I have been taken advantage so many times and in hindsight those events taught me the most.

I always assume I'm being scammed so I tend to not risk anything I'd regret losing. It's a cynical way to live but it works for me.

@BlokchainB probably has some great advice. They've written about dealing with scams a few times.

Right, everyone I know that has been scammed severely afterwards becomes much more guarded, skeptical, cautious and won't take outsized risks. It makes sense though, it is a dangerous world out there.

That's true. I only have this kind of low risk-tolerance with money though for some reason. I'm just not financially optimistic I guess.

yea, this is one of the things that moved me to bitcoin only, I lost $3K in Luna, but honestly I was expecting to lose money playing with these snakes. It felt horrible because I could have helped pay for my fiances student loans, or gone to 20 nice steakhouses, but instead I was playing with fire and got burned.

I lost a bunch in shitcoins and DEFI and got hacked on a local exchange, and yeah learned my lesson the hard way wrote it off paid my dues and moved on, costly lessons form diamond hands

Yea that's a good point. I have stronger conviction more than ever now to save in bitcoin and bitcoin only in cold storage from the times I have been scammed.

I had to take someone to small claims court once but it was just a waste of time and money. We won the judgement but never saw a cent. Can’t draw blood from a stone.

So I just sucked it up and moved on.

In the end, you wouldn't have taken them to small claims court? I'm sure it was a nice psychological win I guess - may help with closure.

I guess but it was a waste of time and money in the end. But yes it was nice to be recognized by the court as victorious.

Yeah since I been in the bitcoin space I got scammed and lost a ton of sats. At first you feel angry like how could I have been so stupid. Then you feel really down about it almost to the point where you want to cry everyday. Then you have days when you want revenge and still hold out hope that you may get your funds back. Then the finally feeling the one that has kept me grounded is being thankful for the things I do have and the sats I didn’t lose. Health, family, love, food, water, sunshine, and God himself granting me this 1 in 400 trillion chance at life. If bitcoin becomes what we think it will then these early losses will be a distant memory. If bitcoin becomes worthless well it was fun while it lasted and got to do some really cool things that I never would have explored like learning Linux and understanding key signatures.

So I say all that to remind you don’t beat yourself up too much. If you lost your stack just start from zero again. If you want make a complaint (which I am in the process of doing) if people are stealing they need to be brought to justice and hopefully stopping them from having another victim. So stay in there and if you come across something that is sketchy ask SN.

Yea it wasn't anything to big! I like the approach on focusing on the positive because in the end many of these in here have a lot going for us and a nice stack if things go up in fiat terms.

It is never fun being burned, but it makes me more directional and purposeful with what I am doing.

I do find some satisfaction in going to church occasionally, at a minimum a place to meditate and be one with myself.

Why or how a legit company is a scam? Will be good to know a little bit more about it.

Many years ago I got scammed when I was selling a brand new video console and I got paid with fake money 💰.

Nothing to do about it, just move on.

A long, long time ago, I had a small amount of Eth that was not doubled like the website said it would be. Now I don't participate in the scam of even just holding altcoins. Bitcoin only.

Right, it plays into the "If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is"

There are some pretty legitimate looking scams on Youtube talking about doubling peoples bitcoin. It could happen on any network.

Reality is that we really cannot move on. I must admit that I can't. There is no way that we can make it go away.

You were pretty careful and cautious yet you were victimized because you are hoping for the best. No way we can avoid it and move on, it is part and parcel of engaging with fellow human beings. You learn even though there is nothing to learn. You earn even though there is nothing to earn. For everything else there is Bitcoin.
