Cut Day
The NFL Season is upon us. We are 9 days away from the Ravens and Chiefs clashing in an AFC Championship rematch to kick off the season next Thursday. But before the games can begin, active rosters need to be trimmed down to 53.
Today at 4pm est is the deadline for that to occur. It should be a heavy news day in the NFL and we should see some potentially surprising cuts and maybe a few last minute trades as teams try to scoop up guys that are about to be cut before they hit the waiver wire or become free agents. For context, players with fewer than four years of NFL service are subject to waivers (teams can claim existing contracts) and players with more than 4 years of service automatically become free agents and can sign with any team.
I am hoping the 49ers can bolster their OLine and DLine depth either via trade today or picking up guys than have been cut by other teams but we will see. It is already a crunch for the 49ers to get down to 53 and they are probably going to lose some quality veterans and a couple promising young players. I just hope they don't cut Chris Conley. With the Aiyuk contract issues and Pearsall only returning to practice this week, what was a very deep WR group isn't so deep anymore and Conley is a veteran that can play all WR positions.
What are you hoping to see from your team on cut day in terms of guys to keep or in terms of trying to bolster the roster with guys cut from other teams?

The Texans have some crazy depth at WR and RB that will need to be cut back big time. It will be interesting to see who will make it as the last option for those two positions... The team otherwise seems to be pretty stacked throughout I do wonder a little bit about the secondary and wonder if we might try and swing a trade there using the WR and RB depth.
I just read that Keenum is hurt which leads me to add trading or picking up a QB depending on if we put him on the IR before or after the deadline or cut him instead...

I don't know what's going on with the Aiyuk situation but I thought if he did get traded the to the Steelers the 49ers would try to maximize the picks in return and not try to get a WR back and then flip one of the picks to the Texans for a WR.
But hard to do that now not knowing if Aiyuk is staying or going. If he is staying they don't have a roster spot for another WR and if he is going they definitely need another WR. A bit of a quandary they are in. Ultimately they will probably have to take the heavy handed approach and start fining him for not reporting to force him to show up or agree to the deal with the Steelers so they can make the trade.

Yeah that whole situation is pretty odd... Neither team is willing to give him the $30 mil plus a year he wanted. From what I read both were pretty similar topping out at $28 mil and I am not sure how Lambs contract affects him because he isn't Lamb at all... Lamb is on a whole other level.
It seems to me that Aiyuk thought there would be a much bigger demand for him and he thought he could get teams he had no interest in playing for to bid him up and welp none of that happened!

The problem for Aiyuk is the 49ers have so many weapons that he just doesn't get the targets some of the other top 10 receivers get. His efficiency stats and yards per catch, yards after catch are comparable to these top 5 guys but he just doesn't have the receptions, yards and TDs to be in the 30M range. My other qualm about Aiyuk is every time Deebo is out and the 49ers need him to be that true number one he shrinks. When Deebo is out there stretching the field, Aiyuk is open on almost every play but 49ers offense is CMC first.
I think the 28M is about right. He is a top 10 receiver in my book but not a top 5-6 guy.

Yeah I have heard that knock on him as well. He excels when there is a true #1 and they take the pressure off him so he can explode. To hit the $30 mil range you gotta be a true top 5 in my mind and be on that Mike Evans level where you didn't even have a QB for a bit and still put up numbers.
reply
Well Mike Evans is a future HoFer. I don't need Aiyuk to be that but taking the team on his back once and awhile when they need it would be suffice.

Understandable I just think that is one of the $30 mil a year unofficial requirements lol!

I'm gonna watch this year's NFL. I became interested only last year while i sae that it's much more entertaining and enjoyable than Football. While I still don't understand too much of the rules, i would give it a shot.

I've got my fingers crossed that the Raiders find a trade for Tyree Wilson. He's getting buried on the depth chart, while getting paid 7th pick money. On production alone, he'd just be waived. Maybe the 49'ers want him. You've gotten some decent mileage out of our D-Line castoffs in recent years.

I wish they had kept Clelin Ferrell he was a run stuffer last year. Not so great against the pass. They definitely could have used another DE especially with Drake Jackson out for the year. Jackson would have been 4 on the depth chart. Now they are relying on Robert Beal Jr to fill that role (5th round pick 2023) and is more of a 3rd down pass rush specialist only.
If they don't add now, I expect they will do something similar to last year and go after DLine help at the trade deadline. Chase Young was a disappointment overall considering his pedigree but he was really good in the playoffs.

Louis Reese-zammit. 🫡 You did good lad. Shame it didn't work out.

The Jets kept either 10 or 11 DL, that might be a bit much

Getting ready to run over the sad 49ers OLine, especially if Trent Williams isn’t in the lineup.

One could only hope

I am not happy will the 49ers cutting a couple OLineman today. Need the depth with guys out hurt and Trent still on hold out. Maybe they think they can get them back for the practice squad but an odd decision.

Trent for Hassan
reply
No thanks. Hassan is great but 49ers need OLine help way more than DLine help.
reply
Jets go through O linemen like they go through QBs :/
reply
Haha to be fair there are not a lot of good OLinemen, especially tackles in the NFL.
Not Brayden Willis. Damn you Shanahan.
