wow I wouldn't have thought that Pilots and flight engineers would be that high up ... I wonder if these are all "professionals". (as opposed to hobby pilots ...)
Jobs is in the title. Yes airliners are safe, but that is only the top 5% of professional pilots.
You don't start off flying airliners (in the US). You start in the military, or night cargo, air taxi, air ambulance, powerline/pipeline, flight instructing, etc. You are getting shot at, flying at low altitude, airplanes with less redundancy, and operating in more challenging conditions, often at night. No matter how good you are, you need some luck to survive the early years. I have 3 friends that should be dead, and I've lost one.
