I have to believe the deal was revoked for political reasons. It may have been considered too lenient to hang on Biden/Harris with the elections coming up? It is unusual to revoke a plea deal after it has been signed and announced

this territory is moderated

Thats kind of weird, right? After it has been signed, isnt it a binding agreement?

reply

These are Guantanamo guys. The rules are different. Typical prosecutions don't involve the defense secretary. Even in traditional prosecutions, there are ways to unwind plea deals, depending on the facts.

reply

So did they find new information? Or just werent comfortable with the deal?

reply

I'm sure it was all about not embarrassing Harris.

reply

What does Harris have to do with it?

reply

If a deal is seen as lenient, the Republicans can use the deal against her in the election. She is tied to the current administration as vice president. I can see the ads now. Harris locks up people for minor marijuana violations, but gives terrorists a plea bargain.

reply

That is pretty thin, but true. They can just wait until after election season, right?

reply

Yes, that's possible. Remember, Harris was a prosecutor who was very tough on non violent offenders.

reply

Thanks for explaining. I had the same question.

reply

What happened to waterboarding enhanced interrogation techniques?

reply

We just don't talk about them any more. Doesn't mean they went away. Short attention spans.

reply

It is of course revoked for political reasons. The 9/11 was a massacre and to deal the conspirators with mercy for this would ruin any hopes for the Dems in coming elections.

reply

May be the democrats rose from their eternal sleep suddenly.

If it wasn't revoked, it would have been the weirdest handshake in human history.

reply

There is no evidence these guys plotted 9/11

And the biggest beneficary from 9/11 remains the US federal government

reply

And the owner of the buildings. He made above alot of cash. which he wouldn't of gotten just selling it.
Plus odd who wasn't in building the day of the attack.

reply

completely political after being too lenient

Why are we plea bargaining with terrorists? Only illegal immigrants get special treatment in America!

America Last!

reply

They just smacked him across the face with the Patriot act

reply

historyDemocrats rising from their eternal slumber: 'We're here for the handshake!' But alas, it was canceled. 😊

(It may have been considered too lenient to hang on Biden/Harris with the elections coming up) perhaps it would be true As we can see the current seatuion

Strange to announce it then shortly after announce that it has been revoked.

My understanding looking at this from outside the US was that the government said they hadn’t agreed it, the prosecutors told them about it on Wednesday. I saw that Biden had rejected a plea deal last year.

Definitely think that it isn’t a good look to agree a plea deal in an election year but I do wonder if they announced the prisoner swap with Russia around the same time so that it wasn’t the lead piece in the news.

Hey, so there was this memo that came out on Friday night, right? And in it, Austin basically said, ‘Hey, the responsibility for this big decision? Yeah, it should totally be on me.’ But get this: just two days before that, the Pentagon was all like, ‘Guess what? We’ve got a plea deal with Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (you might know him as KSM) and two other folks – Walid Bin ‘Attash and Hawsawi – who were accused of plotting those attacks
