When I travel by car, my dog come with me for weekends out of town.
But, when I need or want to go to a farther place, I normally left him behind.
In Portugal and Spain, the restrictions for flying with dogs are a lot. And when the dog is allowed to flight, the price is very high.
What do you do with your dog when going on holidays?
Do you find a dog sitter and he stay at your home with your dog? Or you take your dog to a dog hotel?
Cheers
If you have a few animals you do not go on holidays. If it is only one dog you can take him with a car. Flying is only an option for small dogs. Everything else is not a holiday for animals.

Anywhere we go by car we bring our dog and just get a pet friendly Air BnB. If we have to fly our dog would stay at my parent's house, which is great because she loves it there, but we haven't all gone somewhere by plane since we got her. My wife and son travelled to visit family earlier this year but my daughter and I stayed home so no need for a dog sitter.

This is always an issue for us. We never take our pets with us on vacation. Sometimes, we have a friend house sit for us, and she takes care of the cat and dog. Lately, though, she doesn't often have the time or availability. So, we have two families we discovered on Rover where our dog stays at their home. Our dog has gotten to know the family dog and the family. We find that it's better and less stressful than a kennel full of caged, barking dogs.

Dog hotels are almost as expensive as human hotels (5 years ago) in my area but unfortunately its the only option if a close friend or relative cant do it.
