Lots of academics suffer from that syndrome. As soon as they get out of their comfort zone of year-long expertise, they still think of themselves as experts, yet don't realize their ignorance.

No need to "hmmm", let's just say it: Krugman is writing about things of which he has no knowledge. Disgraceful, for someone purporting to be an academic
