I think I’ve coined a new psychological term: "Online Ads Phobia." You won’t find it in any psychological manual.
So, what can be described as "Online Ads Phobia"?
I can describe as "Online Ads Phobia" the fear to click on a link or to visit a website because of the numerous ads that might pop up and invade your space. It's the hesitation to search for an item online because you're worried that any webpage or social media you visit afterward will bombard you with ads for the same or similar item you were looking for previously.
I know there are solutions to this problem. You can install an ad blocker, and I have done so. However, some websites don’t allow access if you have an ad blocker enabled, so the problem persists. Additionally, an ad blocker cannot stop personalized or sponsored ads on social media. So, if you want to use these platforms, you have to accept the constant bombardment of ads.
Things are different here on Stacker News. You don’t need an ad blocker. Stacker News is like an "oasis in the desert of ads." You don’t have to worry that clicking on a post or scrolling will cause an ad to pop up for a few seconds, or that similar ads will then appear all over Stacker News, as often happens on other platforms and social media.
I really love this aspect of Stacker News. I haven’t seen any posts on SN mentioning this fact, which makes me think that the absence of ads is something taken for granted. I truly appreciate the decision of the SN founder to keep pop-up ads off this great platform, and I hope it remains this way.
What do you think about this aspect of Stacker News? Don’t you find it great?
