The exceptional expedition into history through time-travel what @Undisciplined started and @sn robbed from him is just incredible! For me to know about the days when SN was enjoying its infancy, developing and regularly adding new updates and features, has become an addiction. Often the top posts there give me an idea how it all might have come together bit by bit. The polls didn't come with the opening draft is one piece of grand total that we see as Stackers News today. And [it's a big day as it's Pollversary, the 2nd anniversary of polls!!
So, rejoice SN, zap this post big and make some congratulatory comments, can send some Pollversary cake memes, don't forget to put 2 candles on top of it, bring a lighter and blow some bla, bla, bla! Yup, don't we do a lot of it! (I beg your pardon for the offense)
I'm not and not my family have had a tradition of celebrating birthdays in the way as most people do it. No, I'm not against your way of celebrating, but my mother told me in my childhood that birthdays are the occassions when you need to do two things — one is to retrospect and the next is to plan for the next year.
Again pardon me if I'm wrong to align my mother's views here with Pollversary. I want that we all should retrospect and plan for making Polls bigger and better. I want to hear your views on polls keeping in mind how they've performed in comparison to links, discussions, bounties or jobs but before you do that kindly bear with my own views.
Polls are or should be seen as a very important and distinguished feature of SN. On most other platforms where we can open a poll are run by either of a MSM producer or a Centralised social media platform. It's enough to say that these polls running elsewhere can easily be manipulated. For instance I've posted a poll post about Trump vs Harris from NYT which claimed to be conducted with foolproof mechanism but I still couldn't believe in that. I know most of you wouldn't believe such polls either. Whereas at SN, polls are conducted with so much transparency and accountability that they can't be faked or manipulated in any way.
But it definitely irked in me how the polls at SN haven't been as popular or as consumed as mere links have been often times. Now a days, I witness a huge flood of links — significant or stale — are being posted by Stackers and getting zapped generously. But polls are not even getting closer to mere links is quite surprising! Are polls not as worth or valuable as links or we're just averse to polls. Or, we aren't getting good enough and valuable poll posts? I can't get it.
So, I want to ask all of you why polls didn't perform well in comparison to links, bounties and discussions and what needs to be done to popularise polls at SN?
A Very Happy 'Pollversary' to all!!
I expected this post to be a poll.
I've been a little disappointed in polls, when I've used them. It seems like it could be a fun post type. One of the problems is how they get buried under new content and no one ends up seeing the result. I wonder if polls could go back to the top of recent once they close. That would bring the results to people's attention and possibly kickstart a fresh conversation.

I also thought of making it a poll but because I didn't want to make it optional I went with a discussion.
Yes, I think most would agree.
  • Some of the fun polls have worked well.
  • The problem that they get buried is definitely one to address. Can it done by a seperate tab for polls?
  • 'Top of recent' can prove to be very handy.
  • 'Bringing result' once the poll is over will surely lead to better adoption and engagement with polls.
What about adding some bounty type feature to the polls? Like whoever wins the poll will get some amount of sats!

We talked about something like a bounty idea before. Essentially, it would become a pooled betting post. There were some technical issues with doing that, I think, but I was a big advocate for it.

This is a good idea. When I do the Saturday poll it is fun for a few hours when everyone is voting and discussing and then I don’t even think people go back to check the result of the poll.
reply
I know I don't
reply
Sometimes I don't either. I usually have a good idea of the result anyways because everyone votes in the first few hours.

Kindly join the party here. The Poll about polls is out now
