Germany has the second largest participating contingent, even though it has the second lowest population among the top 20 nations with the most number of citizens.
I actually didn’t know that Germany is such a formidable sporting house.

Great minds think alike, @suraz!
I am so confused about India. Billions of population but the participants they produced are so less. Maybe due to political instability. Or the government only investing on cricket and it's field.
Given the prevalence of Spelling Bee champs n IT wizards in India, I have the impression that many Indians don’t think of sports as a viable career option
Yes, this is reasonable.
One of the great sports mysteries is why the Indian sub-continent has so few athletes in most sports.
They are all trying to win Scripps National Spelling Bee
I've seen descriptions of what other activities they occupy themselves with, including a fixation on cricket as their sole athletic interest.
Why they're so different than the rest of the world, though, is the mystery?

It's really looking very bad for some highly populated countries. May be they need to work on their sports infra!
It pains me always to look at South East Asia and not finding so many sportspersons from there. India is growing in it also but needs to look beyond Cricket's popularity.
