We brought it on ourselves. In high trust homogeneous societies, not too much taxes were wasted at first.
I think tax pressure levels were unrelated to the introduction of the euro.
Edit: Except for maybe Greece (and Spain?) who were completely unsustainable with early pensions and a lot of tax-evasion. But that's an outsiders perspective.

Currently EU is facing deep trouble economically. These troubles may have lowered the wages in comparison to US.
