I thought @kr was onto something turning off links. It increases the chance of people staying on SN since there's no option to leave the site without opening the discussion post.

I believe @davidw had a good writeup about how discussion posts earn much more than link posts, I'll have to find that again.

Then again, maybe I should just let ppl post what they want.
