We opened a wallet live and I sent them some, but most of the people I gave BTC never got involved any further, which defeats the purpose of the gift. I could verify when I spoke to some of them maybe a year later and they still saw it as an internet curiosity.
Also, you simply don't give money as a gift. Back when I was young it was seen as a lack of tact to give money or to leave the price tags on your gifts.
Ah, I see. Same experience here with most of my people. However, I gifted hardware wallets on birthdays and else gave away bitcoin by just sending them the seed words; they had to figure out the rest by themselves (or come up with questions).
I think gifting money it's still seen like you described. That's why I bought hardware wallets. The other cases I would describe as "giveaways".
