Perhaps it's moot, but people had been emphasizing that DNC rules require delegates to vote for the person they're pledged to unless released to vote freely by the candidate. It seems like a reasonable person acting as a delegate could argue that they were released and it's not even a matter of "in good conscience", they just preferred someone else.

I think that would apply whether a candidate releases delegates or not. A delegate always can vote against his or her candidate in good conscience.

The "good conscience" clause is potentially important.

Something that I haven't seen anyone talking about, though, is that Biden seemed to have released his delegates. He said on TV that they can do whatever they feel like when they get to the convention, when he was asked about the possibility of them voting for someone else.
