I think Art is a mix between Plato's view and the Catholic Church's view:

Plato: Art is immitation of life
Church: Art is a way of manifesting the truth

The artist is someone that sees something in the world, in himself, in the people around him and try to show this something to others. Without this intention of communicating some truth there is no art.
