In Singapore, every citizen and resident has a SingPass (Singapore Personal Access) digital ID account, which is touted by the authorities in the city-state as their “trusted digital identity” – not to mention a “convenient” one.
South Korea also has something such as a personal banking certificate which is linked to your phone number, as well as a Real Name System which assures everyone has a single identity, both online and offline. It's maybe not as advanced yet as in Singapore, but it makes it very hard to do anything in Korea without the government knowing about it. I don't think identity theft is a big issue yet here.
What about your country?
