Less than a century ago, the Democrats would have been able to legally remove a candidate in crisis and replace him with someone who would give the party a fighting chance in the presidential election.
Those were good times. The laws were quite simple. Do it or don't do it. Nowadays, it's like you can be out of both. The political leaders are not measured for their sickness and ageing as per law

It's the Party's fault for not having a real primary.
RFK wanted to run by they blocked him and ostracized him.
Others like Gavin Newsom wanted to run but he didn't want to upset Party leadership.
Democrats also have Super Delegates who can vote to remove Biden at the Convention.
There is still a secret smoke filled room that calls the shots.
