Setting up an Umbrel as a Bitcoin node properly

I've been a quite watcher of #bitcoin for awhile now. I have an Alby wallet, use Fountain and play with sats.

Now I set up an Umbrel. As I download the blockchain in preparation to have my own #node, I see there are a ton of various bitcoin apps available for the thing.

Can I get advice of which of the apps I need to make things work well and stay secure. How do you have your Umbrel node setup?

If using a raspi, do not install mempool. It will eat your ram for breakfast.

Tailscale is a VPN you can use to connect to your node from outside your local network. You must the app installed on the umbrel node and the device you will use to connect to it.

Get thunderhub or RTL. Do not use the lightning node app to pay invoices. (You will overpay fees.)

ya..its worth doing some research on the server options out there. i prefer it. my experience with umbrel was worse, start9 has worked better for me. particularly my experience running LND was better with start9. plus they have a very helpful telegram or matrix chat support that has really helped me the couple times i hit some snags with my node and needed a little technical hand holding to sleuth through CLI.

Depends on what you want to do with it...

One thing I'd recommend is using Tor for node connections (it's a setting -- you just have to turn it on) and then turn off the other options (e.g. clearnet connections).

I'd also recommend setting up Electrs and Mempool (so you can leverage some of the benefits of having your own Node).

Then grab a copy of Sparrow wallet and learn how to connect that to your node...

Those I'd say are good basic next steps...

This step should be easy for you. Turn your Umbrel node on and after 5 minutes, go to any computer or phone that's on the same network and in any web browser go to http://umbrel.local. You should see the setup wizard start up and guide you through the rest of the process of setting a username and your Umbrel password

I think it's hardware that is more important

More important than the apps, is the hardware you'll choose to run your node effectively

Umbrel 1.X is shit in that you cannot customize settings or install your apps not from Umbrel App store. Everything will be wiped when it updates. If you can find the image, I recommend Umbrel 0.5.4.

I am sticking to that version, but if I had to do it again I would build a bare metal node. The apps I use:
