I just posted a health related science article. I initially wanted to put it in the ~health territory but advised against it as i could post it in ~science at a fraction of the cost. Even though it would have made more sense in the ~health territory. This happens more often than not, especially if I'm posting ~anon at 10x the cost.
Does anyone here consistently post in the optimal territory regardless of the cost?
I'm asking as I'm still thinking about optimal fees for my own territory. I'm having it relatively low at 100 sats (and i usually reimburse you by zapping you), but i wonder what's the experience of territories charging 1000 sats for instance.
Yes, I used to post in ~libertarian, ~health, and ~culture quite often, but now I feel they are too expensive.
Where possible, I post in another related territory, but sometimes I just forego posting.
I respect what those owners are trying to do. On the rare occasion that I think I have a really high quality post that specifically fits their territory, I'll still post it there.

Same here. I do kind of miss the old ~libertarian

At some point, I am going to finish Tough Questions for Libertarians. I'll keep making those in ~libertarian even if the fee stays high. I just haven't felt motivated to dive back in.
reply
Same!

It's interesting how 1000 sats is a hurdle. I find myself more than willing to pay 100 sats to post and also willing to pay 420 sats and 600. But for some reason the 1k price always stops me. I ask myself: am I actually going yo earn much more than this? Also, why not just post somewhere cheaper?
It is not clear to me what benefit I get by posting in any particular territory. It does not seem to affect my global visibility. On the flip side I usually only post in ~bitcoin, ~mostly_harmless, and some now defunct territories.
I guess I'm asking, what do we get for posting in a more expensive territory like ~libertarian that we don't get for posting in a cheaper one?

For now, very little.

Yes. I posted a serious review of a newer approach to exercise science in ~health as a newer user and did not recoup my cost. Not only did I get discouraged from posting in that particular territory, but I’m not as inclined to write about exercise science, which is a topic I’m pretty passionate about, but challenged to write about as it’s “out of my comfort zone.” However, after writing that, I say to myself that’s a bit of a quitter’s excuse and perhaps I should shop around for the best territory for those sorts of posts.
reply
It’s really a shame. ~health was quite active at one point. I liked sharing smaller posts with people, but most of them stood no chance of reaching 1k.
reply
Usually no but I wanted to post in a territory one time and the fee was 1000 sats so I didn't bother and posted in meta. I don't believe that territory is around anymore.
reply
Usually, no, but I don't post often. If I wanted to make a post and it was going to cost 1000 sats, I may look for a different territory with lower fees. Anything in the range of 1 - 500 I probably wouldn't think twice.

I must admit it has affected me a few times. As a territory owner I try to keep fees reasonable. I'm not great with analytics. @davidw could probably give us a great analysis.
reply
You shouldn't think of this as "admitting" anything. Making these decisions is how price discovery happens. If we want SN to be the best version of itself, then we need to be price sensitive.
reply
Very true. I would like to see some analytics. Do you have any insight?
reply
Other than that a few territories used to get thousands of sats from me every month and now they get zero? No.
reply
I was thinking people were posting anyway but that I may not have noticed.

The question/s I see here is:
  1. Do you get rewarded in the Stacker pool reward by contributing a sat amount? If the answer is: Yes, the algorithm rewards by what you spend.
  2. Price discovery is about service so does your territory serve you or does it serve others?

Yes, I will definitely not post if someone is demanding 1000 sats. That will be a salary in one week one day and I will shop around or not post at all.
It's like pulp fiction (not the movie), in the 1990s 7-Eleven would sell books on a small 24" x 24" kiosk that rotated. I found Kurt Vonnegut and Tom Robbins in those selections. I read BLUEBEARD by Vonnegut after buying it in the store. Books were cheap and profitable to vendors. Now 7-Eleven is a big food vendor in nearly every square foot.
Stacker is basically a vanity press but it's also with great people writing good things and sharing great and banal ideas.
I've considered getting my own territory but I not confident in exactly what I would do other than point one of my domains at it.
reply
The relevant question when posting in one of those territories is whether or not you recoup the cost of posting.
I don't think Stacker News is big enough, yet, that there's a huge difference in visibility across territories, so it's hard to justify having a much higher price.
I'm in the same boat as you wrt territories. If the right opportunity presents itself, I'd like to buy one, but so far I haven't seen an attractive enough option.

It depends on how active the territory founder is. If they charge 1000 sats but I don't expect them to zap it, let alone leave a thoughtful comment, then I'm hesitant to post.
This happens more often than not, especially if I'm posting ~anon at 10x the cost.
@anon is 100x the cost for posts/comments, but maybe 10x makes more sense for posts.
reply
Oh my bad.
Yeah, not sure what's better. a multiplying factor makes sense, just don't know which one. I'm usually ready to spend more as anon as i feel a stronger emotional urge to post even if i don't feel comfortable doing it in my name

I think it is a bit noticeable how much viewership happens between each territory. I think some people look at the more popular ones, and dont look at others. Each to their own, though. I usually just see what has hit on the recent, it doesnt matter which territory it comes from.
reply
It's definitely affected me a few times (sometimes convincing me not to post, period). There's enough overlap between some territories that it can already be a bit tricky to figure out where to post, but a huge disparity in fees makes a difference.
reply
It affects me. I've found good information that I haven't posted because the fee is high. I've also posted in other territories for this reason as well, when it fits another territory.
reply
Yes, Sometimes.
reply
Not really. It may be due to the fact that I don't post in every territory. My territory choices include ~bitcoin ~bitcoin_beginners ~econ ~charts_and_numbers and others.
But I also think and may be I've posted once or twice in those costly territories and if I come up with a post idea for any territory, I won't mind posting for once or twice in a month.
reply
Unless due to major force (like posting a feedback on ~meta), I go for the cheapest theme that sounds the closest to the theme of the topic.
reply
I would have posted in Health a number of times but due to the fee I instead use Science or Alternative.
reply
I am price insensitive up to 420 sats (~Mostly_harmless). That’s because some Stackers have started an occasional thing in which they post stories of their children. Sharing my parenting (mis)adventures is important enough for me to warrant a gamble. If I don’t recoup my sats, I think of it as helping the territory owner.
Also I think just posting helps me to rank higher in the Leaderboard, so I post like a boss on ~firesidephilosophy because I consider the Daily Rewards as a source of sats for that particular writing rather than a bonus.
reply
It definitely does. I tend to primarily post in the ~Bitcoin territory because it is 100 sats. Some of them are 700-800 sats and that is a little bit too high. I'm fine with anything between 100 & 300 sats.

I think it's not appropriate and too expensive, at least for now.
reply
Not often, if I have to publish something I do it, yesterday I paid a fee of 1000 to open a post, I was not very worried, although logically I would prefer to pay less...
reply
Definitely!

For sure. Some fees seems to be disproportionate and made me even decide not to share interesting info or links.

It sounds like you're navigating the balance between posting content in the most relevant territory versus the cost associated with doing so. Many users face similar decisions, often opting for more cost-effective territories even if their content might fit better elsewhere. It's a strategic choice influenced by budget considerations and maximizing exposure. Regarding optimal fees, setting lower fees like 100 sats can attract more posts, but higher fees around 1000 sats might offer better visibility and potentially higher engagement in more competitive territories. It ultimately depends on your goals and budget allocation for maximizing impact and interaction with your posts.
reply
Does fee affect your choice in which territory to post in?
Yes
Does anyone here consistently post in the optimal territory regardless of the cost?
Nope
reply
Yes, it does affect me.
To illustrate: I wanted to zap your post, but got an error when I tried. Since I've never seen that error before, I thought I'd create a post for it in ~meta. Kinda like a bug report / support question.
That would have cost me 202 sats, which, ordinarily wouldn't put me off.
But instead I decided to add it here as a comment:
Saves me 201 sats.
