I know that this is another one of those chicken-or-egg questions, but I'm going to do it. I am a curious person by nature and I like to ask questions.
However, these days I am seriously thinking about starting to systematically learn how to set up and run my own lightning node. I am almost convinced that I should do this. However, if I were to ask you to give me some reasons why I should go ahead and do this, it would make me feel even more convinced.
Do it for yourself. As your personal payment node. You'll learn plenty and it's fun.
If you want to do it for the network, as a routing node, you need lots of bitcoin and plenty of time to take care of it. Nodes that are not managed well do more harm than good, causing stuck htlc, force closes, etc...
That's an option too of course, but it's at another level of commitment...

Thanks for the suggestion! Didn't know this difference. I'll try to explore it more.

If you are a beginner definitely go for a private node, Blixt or Zeus are the best of those nowadays. As a newbie running a routing node you will probably do more harm to the network than helping it so a lot of learning first before getting to that (optional) level

Make a very important distinction between public and private LN nodes.
