They had no case and a trial would have exposed so much of the US crimes that it was not even desirable. They get out with a guilty verdict which is the best they could get, criminalising journalism in the process and stealing 12 years of somebody's life as a warning to others

New evidence or a re-evaluation of existing evidence might have led to a conclusion that Assange should not be prosecuted, resulting in his release.
