If you need to fight, then you've already lost...
And if that happens, I will fight to the death from the get go!
That's been my attitude since I was around 19 or so, and it has served me well I think, no one's ever bothered, be it in alleyways in Asia or around Kings Cross in the dead of night...
As to Qi, a short answer is harder haha, but will try to get back to that too :-)
Yes avoiding the fight should be paramount. Those people that have grown up in more violent parts of the world might have a different perspective and that's understandable. I'm not keen on the 'fighting to the death' mentality as I think there are other ways to resolve the fight i.e. submissions are preferable - again it's a question of cause and effect for me.

Sure, if you're in an area where there it close to impossible to avoid on a regular basis it should be the opposite: fight in ways that make you likely to survive long term...
That being said I'll try to clarify a little, my experience is that bringing this attitude on 100% within yourself makes those who're looking for victims shy away. They can "smell" it, that you're not afraid, and also ready to take things to a very serious level right away.
Maybe I've been lucky, maybe I'm delusional, but its worked well so far, and during the past ~3 decades I've only felt like reversing back out of a dodgy alleway once, in downtown Barcelona :-)

That makes sense. There’s a lot of power in not being afraid and often when someone senses that they back off instinctively.
