In my day young people of both sexes who wanted to cultivate an intellectual image would have their cool prop books out while sitting in a park, in a coffee shop, at the beach, etc. Choice of reading material was crucial. I always wondered what percentage of those folks actually read the book. Maybe I was just cynical.
