I think this would be a good feature on the site, but regardless, I like this as a personal rule:
Zap at least 10 sats before replying to a comment. Even if it's something you staunchly disagree with, you have to zap the comment before you reply.
If something isn't worth a % of 21 million, it's not worth typing a response. If something seems worth a discussion, it's also worth a few sats. It's like a respect signal.
I think if this were a site rule, or even an unofficial community rule, the number of pointless debates would go down (not that there are a lot on here anyway, especially compared to social media) - probably because replies cost sats anyway - but I think zapping the commenter directly takes it to a different/more intentional level.
Happy Monday boys and girls.
I floated the idea of letting OP's set their own reply fee (maybe within some parameter set by the territory).
If the vision is to reward creators, it makes sense to me that they would be able to set the price of giving them feedback.
reply
This is something very interesting, and perhaps it would help to encourage more interesting and better discussions since people will think very well about what they are going to write.
reply
It was actually an idea I first had for nostr. I thought it would be a good feature to attract more well-known figures. They can make more money and not get spammed with an overwhelming amount of commentary.
reply
Maybe it would be good to implement it in SN, especially in the future when SN has more users, since spam will be a frequent thing, I guess we will even need more moderators.
reply
First, they're going transfer that ability to the territory owners. I think that will be an interesting development in its own right.
reply
Sometimes a good comment is the value you give for the value you get from a post.
Not all v4v has to be measured in sats
reply
That's true. For instance, Darth making you aware of being an ass-milking shitcoiner is its own reward.
reply
I aspire to help half as many people as Darth has. And however I will do it, I will do it with kindness!

Like yours, for example.

I don't know about it being a rule, but I will always tip someone even if they disagree with me, unless it is just a gratuitously rude reply.
reply
That's just what I do, it doesn't matter if I agree or not, I give him the zap and then I discuss the points on which I disagree.
reply
We all know about this and also that your default zip is 54. If a post has got 54, it must be by siggy

My good sir, no disparagement intended, but I'm afraid I must respectfully disagree with your reasoning in this heated parley.

This is something interesting to apply. I will.
Does it worth the reply your time and money?
Only when it's 2/2, do it. Otherwise, skip.
reply
exactly ^
It's a great, simple equation

Are saying that I should zap ad hominem attacks on me if I bothered to reply?
What level of moderation do you claim to do other than reward such behavior?
reply
The OP technique will help you in this case because it's not worth to reply ad hominem attacks. It's a waste of time and sats, both are limited and scarce, so skip these kinds of comments and keep doing what you do bro.
Why would you bother to reply something like that? Well, let's say you want to, that's fine. The next day, you will check your stats and see that you paid with your time and money to reply something that doesn't have any value other than follow the path of someone who doesn't even care about your comment, just made there to insult you.

Good for you. I would not make this as a feature tho. If you feel something sparks your interest and is worth your time, zap away.... putting limits or mandates is not fair IMHO. Sats have different values in different parts of the world. 100 sats in the US is different than 100 sats in Somalia (just as an example). You see value - you zap, that's the way I see it.
reply
I don't necessarily agree. Sometimes you see around a lot of comments/posts that are either just bs or clearly made to get as many zaps as possible without necessarily offering good content. Now, I often find myself in the situation of willing to reply to call out bs, but also zapping the post/comment would mean upvote it to some extent, which I definitely don't want to do.
reply
There are [at least] two things that are absolutely finite for human beings:
Time, and Bitcoin.
Forcing yourself to zap before you reply makes you more aware of the reality that by responding, you're expending a finite resource.
reply
I'm not against any of your views but think of like this that 'one day someone says 'zap at least 100 sats before replying a comment,'. IMO, zapping should not be forced. It's better leave on stackers for the sake of freedom. 1sat=1comment is also worth. It also makes the daily pot fatter.
reply
I Always zap atleast 11. Because 1 sat goes towards the fees. So I want a person to get at least 10 sats.
reply
yea I agree here. The only ones that I don't zap at are the links that look sketchy with no commentary. There also are some Youtube links but no commentary as well - just looked like a shameless plug. I don't bother even replying to those ones though.
reply
This is a good one. What other stacker news rules do you have?
reply
That’s it so far. I’m not super consistent on this site, but that’s a huge reason I enjoy it. I like that I’m not being incessantly pulled in via toxic algorithms… I just get on when I feel like I have intentionality to spare, and I try not to force it beyond that.
reply
I always do this. If l respond, unless it is something l want to downzap, l will give sats out.
reply
I always zap at least 10 sats even if I don’t reply. It’s a good way to keep your notifications organized as well. If it is not zapped, I know I haven’t read it yet.
