Why? I would be paranoid all the time using Windows. Have you tried Linux? You may like it. In my Linux I have a virtual machine with a windows installation for testing things and I see all the constant connections it does in the background. I would have nightmares using it.

Because that's what came installed on my laptop. I really don't have any other excuse. I of course have heard of Linux but I haven't really researched or learned much about it. I will put it on my to do list.

great. To break the ice, you can have a taste of it installing it on a USB pen drive or a USB external hard disk, and boot from there without installing or touching your internal hard disk. I recommend you to use one with KDE which has an interface more similar to Windows than others. Maybe it won't be as fast as installing it on your system but you can use it and see if you like it and have all apps you need. So you can always return to Windows as if nothing happened :)
