Donald Trump has proposed eliminating the federal income tax system and replacing it with an "all tariff policy" that would rely solely on tariffs as a revenue source for the government.[1] Here are the key points:
Trump floated this radical idea during a private meeting with Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill, suggesting that tariffs could be used to offset income tax cuts and potentially abolish the income tax altogether.[1]
However, experts have criticized this proposal, arguing that it would disproportionately burden low and middle-income Americans while benefiting the wealthy.[1] Since tens of millions who don't pay federal income taxes would fall under Trump's tariff plan, it could amount to a significant tax increase for lower and middle-class families.[1]
Trump has long advocated for tariffs as a negotiating tool against trade partners, but replacing the entire income tax system with tariffs would be an unprecedented shift.[1]
While the idea garnered some interest from Republicans on Capitol Hill, Democrats were more skeptical, questioning Trump's sincerity and motives behind the proposal.[2] Some viewed it as an "election-year ploy" aimed at appealing to working-class voters.[2]
Trump's own tax returns, obtained by The New York Times, revealed he paid just $750 in federal income taxes in 2016 and 2017 while president, despite reporting hundreds of millions in income over previous decades.[3] This contrasts with his predecessors like Obama and Bush who routinely paid over $100,000 annually in income taxes while in office.[3]
Overall, Trump's proposal to eliminate the income tax in favor of an "all tariff policy" is seen as a radical departure from the current system, with significant implications for the tax burden across different income groups.[1][2][3]

Why not! There are countries which run on the same model. It should be applied as an experiment for 1 year.

This was USA before 1913.
The country relied on consumption tax and tariffs and excise taxes in 1789 to 1913.
Lincoln imposed an income tax during the civil war but his action was unconstitutional and the income tax was temporary

But, they didn't change back to the pre 1913 conditions. See, this is politics!
The same has happened in India. In 1950 with the establishment of constitution, A temporary reservation in jobs and other benifits is given to some sects/castes here. But it's still going on. IDK, why? There's no need of it.
For income tax, I hold the view that it's unnecessary. Why? Because a state has control over all the natural resources falling under its territory. As we know that the state harness these resources and sell them internally or externally. The state, then, is more like a corporate that gets benifit from all of these and must use the money in development.
Instead they ask income tax, so as to enjoy their own luxuries. Needless to say what state sponsored expenses are there for politicians!
reply
Those countries don't have the largest governments in the history of the world.
I'm all for abolishing any particular tax, but spending is the main problem.
reply
Labour participation rate would go through the roof.

Interestingly, it's not clear what that relationship is. Income taxes make people work more to achieve the same standard of living.
If abolished people may opt to work slightly less, have a slightly higher standard of living, and enjoy more leisure time. (That's the leisure is a normal good scenario)

And saving rate

Interesting. It could be an election gimmick, though. Trump is not the most trustworthy canidate lol
